Introduction to Jinaayaat & Jazaa

Aromatic Foods & Beverages

 

 

CONTRAVENTION

(JINAAYAAT)

PENALTY (JAZAA)

a.

If aromatic substances mentioned in (1A) of the notes are added to uncooked foodstuffs such as salt, chutney, pickles etc., so that these substances are predominant, and then a substantial quantity of this food is eaten.

b.

If such food is eaten little by little, several times.

Damm

c.

If such food is eaten only in a small quantity.

Complete Sadaqah

d.

If a fragrant commodity, (e.g. saffron), is eaten on its own in a large quantity so that it becomes attached to most parts of the mouth.

Damm

e.

If the fragrant substance mentioned in (d) does not become attached to most parts of the mouth.

Complete Sadaqah

f.

A beverage, into which a large quantity of an aromatic ingredient is added, is drunk in a handsome quantity.

Damm

g.

If the above beverage is drunk in a small quantity.

Complete Sadaqah

h.

If the aromatic ingredient in (f) is not in a large quantity and is then drunk in a handsome quantity.

Complete Sadaqah

i.

If the beverage in (g) and (h) is taken several times, in small quantities, in one place.

Damm

j.

If the beverage in (g) and (h) is taken in small quantities in several places.

One Complete Sadaqah for each place

Note

1.      Food cooked with aromatic ingredients  can be eaten without objection.

 

2.      There is no objection to eating fragrant fruits, but to smell them is Makrooh.

 

3.      Food cooked with fragrance is permissible even though the fragrance may predominate.

 

4.      Eating of elachi or fragrant tobacco in betel leaves is subject to the same laws as outlined above in item

         (a), (b), and (c).

 

5.      If a little fragrance is mixed with the food, which is not cooked, then even if it is consumed in a large

          quantity there will be no Jazaa, but if the fragrance continues to emit from the food, then it is Makrooh.

 

6.      It is permissible to drink a beverage which does not have a fragrance.
